If you can spare the time, a quick drive to Antigua is worth the trip. It will take you an hour or so round trip.

If not, Go to the central park and see the National Palace, The cathederal, and the market. Then you can go to one of the museums if you have time.

Well, let me ask you something? Where are you staying in Guatemala City or where?

If you stay in Guatemala City, I suggest that you visit the History Museums, where you can find a lot about the Mayan Culture.

You can also go to Antigua Guatemala, which is about 25 minutes from the Guatemala City, I am sure you are going to love it.

For more information you can check www.visitguatemala.com

Guatemala City can be dangerous, but small towns and villages are usually safe and full of interesting people, languages, history, and cultures. Not to mention the scenery! Enjoy your stay!
Added comment:
Since you are staying there possibly, I wouldn't take too much. Pack very light, don't keep a lot of money on you, but keep some for 'rob money' in case you get held up. Dress normal, not like a tourist. If you check the Guatemalan or American Embassy web sites, there's tons of very helpful information that may take some time to read, but may save you a lot of trouble!

Take a taxi to Central Market. You'll find unbelievable deals, and will totally be immersed in Guatemalan culture.

In half a day you won't be able to leave Guatemala City. Check out the video at http://www.atitlan.net/video/inguat-video.htm to Inguat's intro to Guatemala.

Get to see Antigua City... Guatemala city is a big town but Antigua as the first colonial capital of Guatemala is really a jewel. Go and Visit Caa de Santo DOmingo and give a sight seing in the city. You will come back I am shure.
