yes!!!!!!!!...google hatchedtoflyfree.org....completely free....they will get you a home stay for just $15 per night....3 meals a day and laundry included...not connected with the volunteer program......i volunteer there...presently we have Canada,Germany,New Zealand,England and me(USA)...it is in Alajuela...10 mins from airport....need more info??..email me...jstcallmesteve@yahoo.com

The National Park Service in Costa Rica accepts volunteers through an organization called ASVO. You work under park rangers and do maintenance and other activities. Some spots are pretty primitive but they are places that tourists rarely get to visit. You can even split your volunteering between parks sometimes.
