Yes, it was until Artigas, send all the Spanish conquerors back to Spain and declared Independence, 150 years ago.

It was a Spanish colony, but the city of Colonia del Sacramento has belonged of Portugal for a very short time. And this city reminds the Portuguese Architecture as well. Besides, there were many conflicts until the Uruguaian Independence Day's. Brazil tried to index Uruguay as a new Brazilian State in 1821, and that resulted in a war called Guerra da Cisplatina (Portuguese) or Guerra del Brasil (Spanish), known as The Argentine-Brazil War in English.

Yes it was a Spanish colony. The cities still show their colonial heritage and the official language is Spanish.

austinateer
it was a spanish colony like most of latin america
the difference with the rest of the three americas is that
it was colony of criollos (first generation of the settlers and on) in the rest of the continent the colonys were formed by the settlers, the criollos and the local natives
thats why to this day when you travel to uruguay you think you are in europe by the looks of the people
