We have 2 days to visit Machu Picchu...?

My husband have 5 days to travel next month. I would LOVE to visit Machu Picchu, but it would require tons of traveling and only give 2 days to visit the place. Does anyone know if this is worth it??

Any other suggestions to spend 5 days?

I think you could make it but its best to look at flights now. You'd have to fly from Lima to Cuzco. From Cuzco, its a 3+ hr train ride (very slow and bumpy) to the base of machu Picchu. A bus takes you up the mountain (takes like 10-15 minutes). There is other ways to do it I'm sure (hiking is one of them) but that's most common.
We spent a few hours walking around and touring before heading back. Its beautiful, breath taking... so, yes, its very worth it.
Also, Cuzco is way above sea level. So you should get there at least a day before your trip to Machu Picchu to adjust to the altitude.
Good luck! Have fun.

You can see 90% of Machu Picchu in a Full Days Tour. The majority of tourists (75%) visit the citadel for a total of 5 hours.

What you should do (from my experiences as a guide and traveler in Peru) is to get to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town) on the first day, this can be coupled with a tour of the Sacred Valley, on the second day you take a sunrise tour (a must!) which a few agencies offer to the ruins. This tour has you enter the site at 6:30am and watch sunrise over the ruins. You then have a good 8 - 9 hours at Machu Picchu to climb Wayna Picchu and explore the ruins thoroughly. At around 3 - 4pm you have to be down at the town to catch your train back to Cusco.

So yes two full days at the ruins is more then enough, factor in the 2 days you will have to be in Cusco for your flights. 5 days at the ruins is too much time really, I would suggest the Inca trail (4 days, final day at MP) or visits to other ruins nearby. The program I mentioned above lets you see more of Peru in less time. Let me know if you need any more help :) 5 days is a very short time to visit Peru, you have to factor in travel time and also acclimating to the altitude which can slow down and even add more days to your travel. Best of Luck!

I agree with CODESONIC.

Try coming on a night flight to Lima, LAN has an every day flights that arrive in Lima (from Miami) at 6:15 am, then you can catch a plane to Cuzco immediately. Take your swimming suit to Aguas Calientes (the town you're going to stay at for the sunrise tour) they got a hot spring pool open until 9pm.

2 days at Macchu Picchu plus 1 day in Cuzco will be unforgettable!
