Greetings and Welcome when you arrive! The top contributor gave some excellent perspectives...I don't think they covered enough the dangers though. Be careful. I live here full time, from the States. Just consider yourself in a ''bad neighborhood''. Do Not go out at night alone. Careful with cabs. 99.5% are excellent cabbies.....ALWAYS ask how much before you get in and be sure they do not pick up anyone else while you are in the cab. Do not wear jewelry.
There are not many selections for clothing and it is expensive...the best selections are in the 2nd hand market. Electronic items are expensive and not much to choose from. Bring what you can with you. If you have a favorite seasoning, bring that too. There are wonderful restaurants in Tegu. Never order a steak unless you KNOW they have good steaks, there is just 1 place in Tegu I am aware of.
The people are generally wonderful. They will be helpful if they can. As a Gringo you will be a target though. There is always the Gringo price and then the Honduran price!! And, because you can afford to travel, it's possible you could be worth something...Keep your eyes open. This is a beautiful country. I hope you come and enjoy and appreciate Honduras and Latin America. Take Care, Mo |

Take the job and enjoy the experience. The people are gracious, helpful and will go out of their way to make you welcome. The food ranges from the poor fare of rice, beans and chicken to middle income Latin food such as tacos, enchiladas, tamales and roast beef. The last was a bit of a joke, but you can find most dishes there that you have in the US. I have never encountered anything weird or bizarre, like roasted slugs. There are even MacDonald's, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Long John Silvers, Dunkin Donuts and most of the rest of the fast food gang. I have yet to encounter an Arby's though. (Darn, six years without an Arby's roast beef sandwich). Tegus also has many very nice and elegant restaurants with fare from Italian to Thailand and anything in between. As far as culture, it is so diverse that you simply need to remember to be nice and they will be nice to you tenfold. Tips about where to go or not, or where to shop, etc. will be willingly provided by coworkers and readily made new friends. |
