What's the bus like from Lima to Chiclayo?

I'd like to visit my buddy who's in the Peace Corps near Chiclayo, Peru...it's $450 to fly from Lima to Chiclayo, but $30 to take the bus. Has anyone done it before? How safe/reliable is it? My Spanish is fairly limited, is it complicated to get from the airport onto the bus?

Obama is a socialist
Its like a US bus only smaller and more stops. If your spanish sucks.. be SUPER SUPER careful. Dont get robbed. Not complicated to get there. Just be sure to tell your Taxi driver clearly or have it written down.

We took the bus the other way, Chiclayo > Lima, in February.

You take a taxi from the airport to the bus station. It should be 20 - 40 soles. You set the price BEFORE you get into the cab. Ask how much it should be at one of the "tourist desk" stations in the airport. If you have the name of the bus line written out, just show it to the driver.

In our experience, the taxi drivers in white station wagons were much better than the little yellow "Tico Taxis", but neither is for the faint of heart. They don't often hit anyone, but they work to closer tolerances than taxi drivers in the USA do.

There are several bus lines. The one we had used double-decker busses more luxurious than Greyhounds in the USA; we had DVD monitors every 6 rows, meal service and a bathroom. (It gets kind of stinky towards the end, though, so go early and don't drink too much on the last half.) Ours didn't make any stops, or I was asleep when they did.

Google "Chiclayo Bus Service" - you may be able to make a reservation on-line. Plan to be there half an hour before the bus leaves.

Here's one. I think this is the one we used, in fact.

If your buddy is in Changoyape, we met him. The "Combi" service from Chiclayo to Changoyape isn't more luxurious than a Greyhound, but if you are lucky no one's chickens will poop on your shoes.

Buses are not too bad, but you can also find flights for under $150 round-trip with Lan Peru, you're better of flying for that price.
