Spanish in both. Also, English and English Creole dialects on Costa Rica's Caribbean Coast.
As for all of Central America, Spanish is the most common language. In Belize, English is the official language but according to statistics, only 3.9% speak it, the most common language there is Spanish and Creole. In Guatemala, the only country in Central America with a very large Amerindian population, 60% speak Spanish and 40% speak an Amerindian language (of which 23 are officially recognized).
On the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua, Honduras and Costa Rica the majority of people speak English and English Creole dialects. The reason is because the majority of people living in that area are black, the majority are of Jamaican descent in Nicaragua and Costa Rica and Garifunas in Honduras (as well as Creoles in all 3 mentioned). |
