What are fun things to in san jose, costa rica?

my dad (70) and I (22) are going to costa rica next week for vacation. we will be in san jose for several days before my brother and his wife (who go there several times a year) arrive. I'd like to hear about some places to go, things to do in San Jose. We're up to almost anything. We've never been before so we have NO clue!! thank you! (:

I know that San Jose does get a bad rap and is not the perfect town, however, there is a lot of awesome things one can see on the local culture, which is a another side of Costa Rica that few have ventured into..

You see a local play at the Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica - http://www.teatronacional.go.cr/

Your can take the Costa Rica Art Tour in San Jose where you view local artists and their works - http://www.costaricaarttour.com/. This is pretty cool if you like art. You get a local meal, group tours are small, and they provide transportation.

You can go to Costa Rica Natural Museums, where you can view historical interest, gold and jade displays and more http://www.museocostarica.go.cr/. This is very awesome, I took my teenage boys to this a few years back and they loved it.

Just the above links you can spend several days just cruising while waiting for your brother and his wife.

Enjoy the other side of Costa Rica and in San Jose...

San José is not as dangerous and ugly as a few people suggest, there are many things to do and see.
A city tour, The National Theatre is a copy of the opera house of Paris, you can go to the Childrens Museum, the Gold musem the National Museum, the Art Museum, there are 3 volcanos a few hours away from San José which can be done in a day trip.
You can also go to the Jade Muesum, central avenue is very popular during Christmas season.
Just make sure you are not careless and flash jewelry or money in the middle of the street, there are pickpockets and chain snatching in conglomerated areas but nothing like other major cities.

The most truthful answer to your question would be to get out of San Jose as fast as possible. It is a very bad example of Costa Rica. It's dirty, dangerous, and a thieves paradise. The traffic is horrible and getting around, even in a taxi is a nightmare.

There are many fun and exciting things to see and do, and enjoy the real natural beauty of Costa Rica, in just an hour and a halfs drive west of San Jose on the Pacific Coast. Take a Zip Line Canopy Tour, visit the Paos or Arenal Volcanos, go White Water rafting, or take an ATV tour, but again, I'd would'nt waste any more time than you have to in San Jose'

If your dad is 70 you def. need to get out of san jose, there are no beaches for about 2 3 hours. I would suggest taking the bus from San jose to Manuel antonio or Jaco are the 2 nearest beaches, and the bus fair is only like 10 dollars . Or depending on your dad Volcan Barva is pretty close if your into hiking. Also Cafe Brit in Heredia you can see the coffee tour and buy yummy coffee =)
