Guatemalans traditionally use Catholic names for their children, much the same as any other Spanish-speaking country. The Protestant sects have a wide following in Guatemala now, so do not be surprised if you see such non-traditional names like Edwin, Lesbia, James or Dalia. It all depends on who you are running with down there.

Otherwise, get used to Jose, Maria and Carlos and Olga.

I have now been living here, in Guatemala, for three months. For females, if their name is not Maria, their middle name is, or they have a sister named Maria. If you forget their name, you can usually get away with calling them 'Maria' because they think you have them mixed up with someone else! LOL!!!

It depends on the generation, but I agree that many women have the name María and many men have the name Jose. But other really common names are, for women: Andrea, Gabriela, Lucía. For men: Diego, Sebastián
