Bring a small gift, absolutely.

If you're living there (vs. just visiting for a few days) don't be embarrassed to ask your hosts what they expect - if they're accustomed to having strangers in their home, they won't mind a bit, and it's better than assuming incorrectly.

My experience with the 'you' form differed - my family used almost exclusively 'Ud' and occasionally 'vos' - but yes, never 'tu'. It's easier to just learn one form, and you never go wrong with Ud. My family even used Ud with the baby and the puppy, so hey.

Appreciate your mama's cooking. Tell them when you'll be back and what your plans are, pick up after yourself, offer to help the family when you can...some aspects of good etiquette are universal. Understand that if you're female there will be a double standard for your behavior. It's okay; this too shall pass. If you travel while you're in the country, take some photos and maybe bring little things back for your family. They don't travel within their own country the way we can.

If you are invited to Costa Rica’s home for the first time, take a small gift such as flowers, chocolates, beer, wine, or if you can, something special from your home country. If you are offered food, try to eat it even if you are not hungry. Not eating is a form of insult. Also try and wear pants if a guy, shirt a girl, it also shows a sign of respect.

Know that it is a big deal for Costa Ricans to invite guests into their home - it is traditionally a private place that is reserved for family only. Definitely bring a small gift, take off your shoes, say gracias and smile a lot. I enjoyed taking photos of the family and mailing to them afterwords with a thank you note.

Bring a small gift that somehow represents where you are from-- in this case it is the thought that counts. Accept food when offered. Don't use the "tu" form of verbs if you speak Spanish-- when they speak Costa Ricans are pretty formal and when they are close to someone they may vos instead of tu.

Costa Ricans are descended from the Americans.
