Hector of Troy
I backpacked Chile for over a month, starting in the north. It is country with many different climates.

In the north you have fantastic desert landscape and can hop over the border to Bolivia from Ururo to Cochabamba for the salt flats and high altitude lakes (worth the trip).

Nearby on the coast is Antofagasta, a beautiful town with great seafood.

Santiago is a live city with lots to see (especially the architecture).

I think the volcano at Villaricca is still smouldering.

But what you can not miss for your life, is a trip by ship from Puerto Montt in the southern part through the fjords to Puerto Natales in Patagonia. What a trip with stunning untouched nature all around! There is no road to Puerta Natales from Puerto Montt. If you are lucky you might see seals, even penguins and whales. The scenery is stunning.

Do this in summer.

In Puerto Natales visit Torres del Paine with stunning mountains and glaciers.

From Punta Arinas, a major port even to the Antarctic, you can go back in time to Tierra del Fuego (with some planning) or even catch a ship to the tip of Antarctica!

Enjoy. Be adventurous! I suggest the Lonely Planet as your bible.

If you are going in The Summer there ( when in winter in the states) go to the south, Punta Arenas, Puerto Varas ( my favorite), Chiloe, Frutiilar, Pucon etc. If you are going in the winter go to the North, Arica, Iquique, San pedro de Atacama, valle de la luna etc. I know the whole country, if you have a question email me klaudiasd@yahoo.com
