Wow! There are some great answers before me, let's see if I can add some interesting and "weird/crazy" things:
In 1969, Honduras entered into a 100-hour armed conflict with El Salvador originating with a disputed soccer game and therefore the hostities were called the "Soccer War"!
Red beans are the national staple but in 1994 there was a shortage of red beans and Honduras imported them from China to meet local demand only to have a boatload of them arrive infested with weevils!
Columbus first arrived in Honduras at the current site of a small Garifuna village called Triunfo de la Cruz.
In Triunfo de la Cruz, just south of Tela, you can get some of the best fried fish and platain to eat at little wooden tables set between palm trees in the sand right on the beach!
The Garifuna are decendants of former Caribbean plantation workers who speak a dialect containing African, French and English words!
"Sopa de caracol" was a very popular song in the 90's about a soup of the same name from the Caribbean coast of Honduras and has Conch meat and Coconut milk! |

1. Some people used to think Pico Bonito, Honduras's tallest mountain, was a volcano.
2. It only takes 12 minutes of flying time from Roatan to La Ceiba and vice versa.
3. El Olvido used to be one of the banana plantation villages in the state of Colon that were wiped out by Hurracaine Mitch. Ironically, "el olvido" means "the forgotten" and so now many Hondurans believe this village was cursed since it's founding.
4. There was a dispute between Honduras and El Salvador back in the 80's about who was the lawful owner of the Gulf of Fonseca.
5. The Mosquito Coast (1986), a film with Harrison Ford, was filmed in Belize but set in Honduras.
7. Honduras means "deepness" and received this name by Christopher Colombus when he discovered this very tropical land.
8. A lot of Hondura's eastern territory is still uncharted
9. A Honduran is known as "catracho".
10. In Honduras, "No te mando ni pija." means "I cannot Fed-Ex you your package until Monday". |
