Lima has 5 beaches for Rookies in the Miraflores district: REDONDO, MAKAHA, WAIKIKI, LA PAMPILLA and PUNTA ROQUITAS.

In Makaha there are many surfers that give private lessons and give you all the gear you need, even thougth is best to have your own wetsuit because it'r a drag to wear a "bigger than your size" wetsuit. It'll cost you US $ 20 per session.

I had a 45 year old cousin and her 20 year old daughter (who came from Chile) going to Makaha everyday last Febuary, they both took lessons with PUKANA Surfing School (contact: Carlos Amaya) surfcarlo@gmail.com

Now if you feel like surfing something better I recomend 2 spots south of Lima. They are both Point Brakes and have sandy bottoms (ideal for rookies). The first one is 69 km south, PUERTO VIEJO (best in the afternoon). The other one is a town with hostels and restaurants, CERRO AZUL. Take in mind that on Peruvian winter we can get big swells and normaly when this happens all the beaches mentioned are maxed out, in that case you can surf TRIANGULO in Lima, or go to LA HERRADURA (also in Lima) and watch surfers performing on 12ft barrels.

One last advice regarding La Herradura. As you can see in this picture, some stupid district mayor constructed a road on the cliff and conected this part of Lima to a poor neighborhood 1 mile south (back in the 80's). You can get a closer look at the waves from there, but only be there if there's other parties as well, when people are alone, they could get robbed by some low life crooks who might appear as poor fishermen. If there's no one around is best to whatch from the beach.

The CostaVerde right outside of Lima is popular with locals. THere are much better places in Trujillo, and further north near to Tumbes.
