Well, first of all it depends on how long you will be visiting Costa Rica. If you don't have much time maybe like a week or so I would recommend the following:
--Poas Volcano or Irazu Volcano
--Jaco Beach
--Downtown San Jose (Gold Muesuem, National Theatre...the markets and such)
--The Ruins in Cartago
--Los Angeles Cathedral in Cartago
If you plan to stay for an extended period of time you might also want to see these:
--Monteverde (about 4.5 hour drive from San Jose)
--Quepos
--Tortuga
--Cafe Britt tour (Costa Rican Coffee plantation) |

You should also go to the natural hot springs its soo refreshing! |

Well naturally there are dozens of "Nature Parks and Nature Preserves", Coffee Plantations, and several Volcano's and many fantastic Beaches - that are truly a must see but too many people miss out on the "Jade Museum" and the "Gold Museum" that are located downtown San Jose.
The Jade Museum contains the worlds largest collection of Pre-Columbian Jade items and is known world wide and the Gold Museum has thousands of Gold items that were found and made, etc in Costa Rica's past which is also a must see!
To me I think going to the Restaurant Tiquicia - which is an old ranch house which sets up in the surrounding mountains about 4,000 feet above the Central Plain just outside of the city of Escazu which is about 12 miles south west of San Jose is an Absolutely must see!
In the evening you can literally see Billions of tiny blinking lights in the far off distance which covers the lights of about seven distant Costa Rican cities and this sight is totally unforgettable!
And you will never forget the friendly service, inexpensive prices and that fabulous food & drinks that they offer!
I was there the first time three years ago and every year I always have to go there to have dinner and to see this beautiful view!

I lived in costa rica for 9 months. If you are up for an adventure i'd suggest going to the Osa Penninsula. You can drive(about 8 hours on extremelly bumpy roads) or you can take a puddle jumper, easiest to book is nature air. Osa penninsula is the last untouched wilderness in costa rica. It is not that touristy like the north west coast and it is far more beautiful. I trekked through the corcovado national park and it was amazing. Also, arenal volcano, or volcon arenal is amazing too. the town it is located near is alot of fun adn the hot springs are somthing not to be missed. If you wanna just go see beaches go to the north west on the pacific side. that is the most touristy part of costa rica. If you get a chance go to Atenas, about 45 minutes west of san jose, that is where i lived and the man selling granizados in the town center makes the best in all of costa rica. San Jose is also very nice. Hell all of costa rica is beautiful. Good luck in your travels, and be careful about renting cars, they have had problems with that in the past. Pura Vida! |

In downtown San Jose, go to the Holiday Inn's Casino on the 17th floor, you'll get a really nice view of downtown San Jose. |

- volcanoes: Arenal and Irazu
- beaches: Tamarindo, Montezuma and Samara in Guanacaste.. Quepos, Manuel Antonio in puntarenas(pacific side)... do not go to the Caribbean Side, beatiful but dangerous.
- Jungle: Monteverde and Braulio Carillo
- Museums: jade museum and national museum in San Jose (be careful, San Jose at night is dangerous, bad guys likes tourists). |
