What are the "not-to-be-missed" places to visit in South America? |
I don't mean the usual spots that any guidebook will tell you, I'm looking for some suggestions that are off the beaten track. If you have had an amazing experience in some part of Latin America that you found was quite exclusive, I'd be delighted if you'd share it with me. |

Cusco..the history of South america is closely tied to the Inca empire, (occupying Argentina, Chile, bolivia, equador , etc) and Cusco was the ancient capital of it..that if you are traveling for a culture purpose ( althought is also lots of fun cause every year is crowded from people from over the world wich makes ithe city somehow special )...but if you are interested in the nature aspect ( wich is also very important in latin america ) I would recommend the brazilian amazony ( specially las cataratas de Iguazu in the frontier with Argentina ). the most known cities are Buenos Aires, Bariloche, Santiago, Rio de Janeiro and a long etc. GOOD TRIP |

You must visit Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas in Peru as well Torres del Paine national park in the Pategonia region in southern Chile. Machu Picchu and the city of Cuzco are rich in history and are absolutely mystical. The southern region of Chile is beautiful if you are a nature lover. |

Well, South America is a very vast region.
It includes several countries so it comes down to your own interests.
If you're talking about countries, all of them are worth visiting. But I do have a soft spot for Argentina.
And Patagonia is a place I love to death. |

THE RAIN FOREST
I've never been to South America, wish I have been but while you're there, you might want to go to the rainforest while its still there. |

You should visit Ciudad Perdida in Colombia. It's far more remote than the Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu. There's only one tourist office that guides trips there in Santa Marta called Turcol. If you do decide to do it, the best guide to have is Edwin. He's super friendly and knowledgeable, but only speaks Spanish. It's a 6-day trek, definitely labor intensive, but well worth it. Unlike the Inca Trail and Macchu Picchu, you are one of maybe 25 people (including guides, etc.). Whereas the Inca Trail and especially Macchu Picchu, you're one of hundreds. You really get to feel the true spirit of Ciudad Perdida. Although Macchu Picchu was incredible to see, the hordes of people took away from some of its beauty and mystique.
I've never been, but my boyfriend says that Patagonia is a "must see", one of the most beautiful places he's ever seen in his life (and he's traveled to over 40 countries), as well as Iguasu Falls.
I can't recommend Ciudad Perdida enough. It was by far my favorite part of our 3-month trip throughout South America and I don't even really like hiking. |

I think you must visit cartagena in colombia and of course Rosario Island in that place. Then you must visit brazil - rio de janeiro with some places as angra do reis, ihlagrande and paraty and of course iguazu falls ( in which you can see both sides in brazil and argentina). In peru, you will never forget COLCA CAYON a wonderful place in arequipa that you must visit. Cusco with the marvellous macchupichu, ollantaytambo, sacred valley, urubamba and all the city is amazing in the day and in the night. Puno in which you must go to the titicaca lake and visit uros island and TAQUILE and if you have time go to bolivia cross peru to bolivia, you will find an amazing landscape and visit Copacabana in which you will have an incredible landscape visiting the bolivian part of that amazing lake with the sun and moon island! And of course the peruvian jungle!! tarapoto with their marvellous falls and landscapes and tipical town of lamas, MADRE DE DIOS with "el manu" that you never forget!! Or iquitos visiting the natural reserve of Pacaya -Samiria. |

I agree, the rainforest. The forest in the Amazon Basin is unbelievable. I recommend Kapawi Lodge in Ecuador. It's not cheap but it's unforgettable. |
