I'm prejudiced! I moved to Costa Rica after several visits and am in love with the country. But the best places to visit depend on your interests, stamina, time available, money available, etc. Although Costa Rica is a tiny country it has a tremendous number of different eco-systems, weather, scenery, action, etc. There are beautiful beaches on two oceans, there are high mountains, and large lakes, beautiful rivers and waterfalls, a mixture of cultures, foods, and languages (although you'll probably need some basic Spanish), adventure, eco, surfing, and fishing tours. Night life is great in some areas, non-existent in others. Make a list of what you want most to get out of a visit, how long you will have available, and how pricey the different alternatives are. Many good sites on the Net including some Yahoo groups about Costa Rica. Check them out. MY favorite place to visit is my own farm and forest near San Vito in the Southern Zone! |

if you like to rough it up, I recomen visitng Puerto Limon, it's so beautiful but the hotels are not exactly the Ritz. visit Cahuita and Isla Uvita if you can, they have great natural beauty. If you are more like a comfort traveler I recomend the PAcific COast which has better hotels. You have to visit Amnuel Antonio PArk if you go there, the sand and the ocean it's so quite but it's not like the normal kind of beach because it has a forest in the coast, it's magnificent. You should visit the Volcan Arenal and it thermal waters, they hotels are good and the place is so beautiful. You should also visit the Golfo de Nicoya, it has great weather and the beaches are simply wonderful. No one knows a country as it's own, so you can trust me on this info, words of a local. |

Anywhere in Costa Rica is awesome. I really like Quepos.. It wonderful. I spend New Years Eve in 2000 there. I also spent a lot of time in Playa Jaco. It is a non touristy spot. You can't go wrong in Costa Rica..

There are lots of great places (and many I haven't been to yet) in Costa Rica, but the highlight of my recent trip was staying at a tent lodge on the Osa Peninsula right outside Corcovado National Park. Jungle behind you, crashing surf in front of you. We saw SO much wildlife in just 4 days: monkeys (TONS of monkeys!), macaws, tapir, toucans, anteaters, sloth, jaguarundi...
Loved Monteverde and Tamarindo too... but nothing was as good as Corcovado.
Hopefully next time I'll get to go to Manuel Antonio. |

Hi,
The best place for you has so much to do with your own taste that it is really hard to provide a short answer to this question.
So, if money is no problem (i.e. you are willing to spend $ on lodging), here is my list:
1. For wildlife viewing and other nature stuff: Corcovado National Park in the Osa Peninsula. It is far but well worth it. There are campgrounds to $1000+ rooms available.
2. For Volcano watching: Arenal Volcano near Fortuna. Just know that it is sometimes impossible to see the volcano due to clouds. It is a good idea to spend a couple nights there and do other activities such as rafting, canyoning, hiking, etc.
3. For beachcombing and surfing: MalPais in the Nicoya Peninsula. I am not a surfer, but this place is popular with the more advanced crowd. It is also very laidback but there are ample options as far as lodging. Nearby Montezuma offer a more touristy feel if that is what you are looking for.
4. Horseback riding/rural life: near Tenorio Volcano there is a wonderful ranch that doubles as a B&B. Nearby Tenorio Volcano National Park is also a very cool place to visit beacause it does not get crowded at all and the surrounding rainforest and cobalt blue waterfall makes this place unique.
5. Culture: that would have to be in San Jose. If you are into jazz, the Jazz Cafe near the University of Costa Rica is a cool spot. The Jade Museum and National Theatre are worth a visit on a rainy day. To visit a really cool coffee farm try Doka Estate near Alajuela. Unlike other "coffee tours" this one takes place in Costa Rica's largest family owned farm. They also own the world's most productive coffee plot!
Good luck,
Carlos |

i lived there for two months and thought that chauita (on the caribean coast) was awesome, black sand beaches, and CRYSTAL CLEAR WATER. and montezuma on the pacific was THE BEST! it is very tiny but so much fun! hard to get to. you have to take a ferry from puntarenas, then a bus, then a 4X4 cab. long trip so spend some time there. i also had a good time in manuel antonio, but it was a little pricy. i did lots of fun things in manuel antonio like canopy tours, and national park hikes and surfing. Arenal and tortugera i heard were a blast too!
i lived in cartago and it was very conservative, but if you are there in the beginning of august it is very surreal b/c it is when all the people from around costa rica make a trek to the bascilica to worship the virgin mary. sanjose can be overwhelming but very interesting and historical. keep a hold of your money!!!! |

I live in Costa Rica, and the best thing to visit is the beaches. In Guanacaste there are nice beaches to surf, beaches like (Tamarindo, Playa Negra, Avellanas are very nice). In the carribean we have nice and calm beaches (Puerto Viejo). You must visit Costa Rica, is reallly nice! |
