If you are from Argentina, Brasil, Uruguay or Paraguay; you don't even need a passport to go to Chile, just your ID card.

People from the following countries need a valid passport to enter Chile but even so don't need a VISA:

Alemania Argentina Australia Austria Bélgium Bolivia Brasil Canadá
Colombia Costa Rica Croacia Denmark Ecuador El Salvador
Spain United States Finland France Greece Guatemala
Holand Honduras Hungary Indonesia Island Israel Italy Japan
Malasia Marruecos Mexico Nicaragua Norway New Zeland
Panama Paraguay Peru Poland Portugal United Kindom
Chec Republic Domenican Republic Singapur Southafrica
Sweden Swiztserland Turkey Ucrane Uruguay Venezuela

When you enter Chile, your passport is stamped and you are permitted to stay for 90 days after that you can have an extension of stay for another 90 days, but you have to do the paperwork before the period expires otherwise they'll charge you a fine but still give you the extension.

I overstayed my visa and I had to pay a surcharge of 10$ US for each day but there was no question of being thrown out or into gaol

They could kick you out of the country, of course. Also could deny your visa next time you want to go.

Well, if they ever detain you, chances are you could by buy them off or get a working Visa --
