And yes, Atitlán is beautiful. It's a lake that's actually the collapsed caldera of a volcano, which is pretty cool. However it is not the same as Panajachel. Panajachel is a town on the shores of Lago (Lake) Atitlán, and imo, the least attractive town there. Try San Pedro instead.

If you like ancient ruins, try to get up to see Tikal, it's amazing. If you have a little time and can leave the country, it's fairly easy to get from Flores (the town you'll stay at if you're visiting Tikal) into Mexico to see Palenque, another amazing Mayan ruin. Or you can make a side trip into Honduras and see Copan.

Be sure to ride a chicken bus - they are safe and it's a fun experience.

You can explore some Mayan ruins, take a tour in Mountain lakes, indigenous villages and volcanoes, shop at the Chichicastenango Market, and relax on a black sand beach.

My favorite place is Lake Atitlan (otherwise known as panajachel). Its a gorgoreous place to go visit. Antigua is always suggested. Chichicastenango is good place to go (especially on a Thursday), Coban is a pretty good place to visit to. Although Tikal is 6 hours away from the capital (assuming that thats where you're staying) its definitely worth the car ride.
Have fun!
