What can you tell me about Peru?

I'm going down to Peru to volunteer for a few weeks. What can you tell me about the culture? How is the weather right now? Are there any large cultural differences I should know before going?

Thanks a ton!

Mrs. Obama rules!
I was born here, I live here and I will probably die here. It's a great country, with a very rich cultural history and with the greatest food and dishes I've ever tasted. Am I biased? Of course, I'm peruvian and proud to be a peruvian. I've travelled a lot (Asia, Europe, Africa and America) and I love to visit other places but I always return here because it's home to me. We do have our share of problems (economic, political, etc) but peruvians never give up, we are optimist fighters. We have 3 beautiful regions with lots of flora and fauna and in a few hours we could have one of the 7 new wonders of the world: Machu Picchu.
About the weather: it's pretty aweful right now, it's winter and the temp drops to 13 degrees celsius but with nearly 100% humidity. Bring a nice heavy jacket. You can buy a scarf and gloves here, there are wonderful made from alpaca.
Cultural differences? Not so much in Lima, you'll find a very "americanized" city. As for the highlands, yes, it's very different as it is quite poor, and rural but the landscape is breathtaking and people are very respecful of tourists.

It's in South America.
They make ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS textiles.
Capital is Lima.
Machu Picchu is the Inca's gift to the world.

Peru is wonderful.

The people are beautiful and nice.

Safety is a concern. Don't take anything with you that you wouldn't mind losing.

Always drink bottled water.

Have fun in Peru it's one of the wonderful places on earth.
