Brazil is an incredible country - don't be put off by stories of crime rates. Every city in the world suffers high crime in certain areas and both of these are the same.
The main tourist areas are safe in both cities but as with all cities you should take precautions such as:
Don't venture to suburbs or shanty-town areas
Don't carry valuables on show
Carry your stuff in plastic bags not expensive handbags
Be careful where you use credit cards
Personally, I would recommend Rio de Janeiro. It is a fabulous city in a beautiful setting with lots to do.
Sao Paulo is more of a business centre than a tourist centre.
Have a good trip! |

Yes, Brazil has a high rate of crime but, a large part of these crimes has nothing to do with money. Only violence between "friends", "friends vs foes" or familiars.
Exist more than 5,660 cities in Brazil. More than 90% are safe. Less than 30 cities (most of these, big cities) are dangerous and the main victms are Brazilians, not tourists.
I advise you to visit Rio de Janeiro, because we have much, much more tourist atractions. See this in my other answer:

If you want to know more about Brazil before come here, see my favorites videos in my YouTube channel. You will find some videos about Rio and many other smaller cities (Look for Gramado, Curitiba and Penedo ) in Brazil:

I am Brazilian and maybe if I said that you can come stopped worrying just taking normal precautions that it would take in any great city, for that I will leave that you read the question that the Italian Stallion wrote. And you can reach their own conclusions.

None of it. I believe they are both danger. Difference is, if you are from Sao Paulo, you know where not to go, same happens to people from Rio.
If you decide to come, just be aware around you, don't go where there is no tour attraction. Well, just do not put yourself in danger for grant it. |

Sao Paulo is safer... At least, I live here since 1997 and I never saw any crime... |
