What country/city in south America is safe for a family trip? |
It occurred to me that we always tend to think of Europe, Asia, and the US as travel destinations. I'd like to try something different. My husband really doesn't like the idea, as he thinks that it is very unsafe there. Someone earlier mentioned Urugway (Montevideo)? At this point, I have no idea whatsoever. Note: we like to walk, and we'd like to stay at a nice hotel. |

I loved Montevideo, Uruguay. It was clean, beautiful, and the peole are so friendly. Buenos Aires is charming and safe(r) than lots of Latin American cities, what I found out though, was that Argentines are a bit stuck up and not outwardly friendly. |

We've traveled through a lot of South American countries with our two kids for 1,5years with own transportation. Chile and Argentina are, as you like, well developed quite modern countries, especially in the larger cities or tourist areas. In Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay you'll find more native like villages, or people overall. We also visited Colombia and loved it. Now we realize this is not what most people think of if going to South America but we are glad we did it and think the Colombians deserve a fair change. We never met more friendly people! It was not our first time we visited South America though, so as a starter I don't think many would choose Colombia.
There are nice hotels everywhere in South America, all the big hotel chains are represented.
Read some of our adventures on our website: http://www.vlinderen.com/finchroad
Our stories are in English too as from Colombia (the rest starting from Houston, Texas and Central America are in Dutch as we are Dutch) We also have a lot of slideshows and movies on it. You can read about Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay and there are some to come.
For now have fun preparing and for when you are on the way Safe Travels and Happy Trails

Well....Everywhere you go it's going to be fine...you can go to a trip to the galapagos islands, Ecuador. Or you can go to Machupichu, Peru...
But I think Colombia it's a great and safe destination...Cartagena is a city in the caribbean really beautiful, it shows great improvement for the tourist. It's the beaches, culture, people, food...you love that city..Santa Marta and San Andres Islands are also great destinations located in the caribbean. If you want something different like, culture...a great imporvement, Bogota is a wonderful destination. if you want like partying...Bogota, Medellin and Cali.... Colombia is a wonderful place to visit...you can find more info. in Google...sure you will say that the crime of Colombia...but those things have changed a lot...
good luck, and South America is wonderful...you will love it..I recommend you Cartagena, Colombia... |

Try Machupichu in Peru. Its full of tourists and your husband is wrong as not all the countries in Latin America are dangerous and in fact, you guys are missing a lot of fun because of that way of thinking.
Peru has the city of Cuzco, a nice hotel is "The Monasterio" its a Monastery from the Colonial times and it costs range from $450 - $4,500 per night. There are other ones less expensive too or more depending on your budget. You can get a cheap one from $45.00 a night too.
Brasil- uhhh Brasil, Sao Paolo or Rio de Janeiro is beautiful and the summer is jan-feb and march. Beautiful beaches.
Argentina- uhh the beef, beautiful Argentina.
Puerto Rico-on summer, lovely...
Costa Rica, Mexico, Venezuela......Colombia (the caribbean colombia) or many others.
Tons of choices but I have been in almost all this places and I can tell you Macchu Picchu, Peru is a fascinating experience and my best second one is Brazil. |

I think you should go to Chile or Argentina, I would suggest Cuba had not been the way it is now. I know people in Argentina are not the most friendly people on earth but you are going there to enjoy your stay with your family so I don't think friendly people or not is an issue, the issue here is safety. I think Argentineans are the way they are because most of them are predominantly from white ancestry and that is the main pride they have. Not that is anything right or wrong with it. It is just the way I see it. |
