I've had great times in both countries, but lately I've been FAR preferring Nicaragua over Panama, Costa Rica, or other Central American destinations.
Nicaragua is most definitely *NOT* an easy country to visit, but if you're comfortable with latino customs and you speak Spanish, it can be tremendously rewarding because so much of the country is unspoiled by commercial over-development. It's easier to find bargains in Nicaragua and it's easier to find authentic traditional food.
Like everywhere in Central America, you find a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables and when you sit down to breakfast anywhere in Nicaragua and taste the luscious sweetness of their fresh-squeezed orange juice, you wonder what kind of iron tastes buds American consumers must have to EVER buy that bland, horrid Minute Maid pulp-free swill that U.S. restaurants "serve". (But then, the same can be said for Panama.) What makes Nicaragua unique is when you find the restaurants that serve comida tipica, and the real treat there isn't always the main dishes, but the DRINKS. Nicaragua has a wealth of commonly sold traditional drinks that are often fruit-flavored, but also often based on corn or even malted barley. Taste a chicha and you'll see what I mean!
As far as people go, you find warm, friendly people everywhere...and Nicaragua is no exception.
There are some outstanding travel destinations in Nicaragua. I especially recommend:
* Granada (colonial charm on the shores of Lake Nicaragua)
* San Juan del Sur (classic surfing beach town...great fishing too!)
* Esteli (cool misty mountains where coffee grows at high elevations)
* Volcan Masaya (national park) |

Nicaragua and Panama are similar but very different too.
Nicaragua is suffering under the heavy thumb of a Socialist Government. Because of this the country has shortages. The most obvious ones are food and electric power. There are people in the streets begging for food. There are daily blackouts of power. There is no reason for this. The country has abundant natural resources. It could do well, but for the corruption at the highest levels of government. It is pretty, in places but the infrastructure is bad and this is apparent in the quality of the roads, poor people as well as the black outs.
Panama on the other hand is more prosperous. The Canal is the economic heart that pumps a steady source of cash into this, the smallest of the Central American nations. There are no shortages here. The people are friendly, healthy and happy. There is high unemployment here as in the rest of the region and there is poverty too, but it is not as bad as other countries in C.A. If you want to see more, you might have a better time in Panama as there is more to see.
The people in both countries are friendly, but you will be safer in Panama as the need to steal for sustenance is not as high. |

They both have pretty much the same to offer as far as friendly people, good food, an easy way of life, and natural beauty. Panama is more urban and "Americanized" and you will have opportunity to buy more products from the United States than Nicaragua but is also more expensive to visit. |
