Nicaragua is realizing it's potential as a tourist destination and is a pretty nice place to visit now. Mexico with it's drug/criminal wars, murders and kidnappings is probably not such a nice place to visit now.

Mexico,I heard there were on average 48 or 78(forgot) homicides there every day.

But both are beautiful countries. You might be interested in safer countries(in my opinion) like Argentina,Costa Rica or Panama.

I would say Mexico. Read the alert below.

For tourists both countries are reasonably safe. Areas popular with tourists are well protected by governmental police and military and private security forces (in Mexico do strike border cities like Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez from your itinerary, as they are both unsafe even for tourists). Mexico is a much bigger country and has many more crimes as a consequence, just as the US has more crimes than much smaller Denmark.

In remote rural areas and poor urban barrios, both countries are dubious for foreigners, especially those with obvious signs of wealth like fancy cameras.

On balance the two countries are roughly equivalent and have crime rates that are not unknown in parts of the US. Mexico and Nicaragua are safer than some parts of US cities!
