Depends on your Spanish and how much risk you are willing to undertake. Flashing cash in a cheap situation is asking for interest from dangerous parties. Dress poor, you might make it. Show up in polo shirt and designer jeans, you are asking for trouble. Your best bet ... check in with someone that has been there and how they handled the situation.
Also, always check in with a trusted local source (not the State Dept. website which can't always have the latest info) for safe and unsafe places and times. On the side, you may want to register with the local US embassy and tell them your itinerary for safety's sake.
What is "cheep" for you? Away from the touristed areas, you can find some real deals. Lake Atitlán is a slice of heaven from my perspective. If you stay in one of the many towns away from the main tourist town of Panajachel, you just might find paradise. Warning .. you may not want to leave. |

Most of your cost will be on room, but you can find rooms pretty cheap, speaking spanish will help a lot. Dispite what someone else said, you can find decent food pretty cheap, just stay out of the Touristy and Trendy restaurants. Ask around, there are people that will sell you lunch very cheap as long as you are willing to eat whatever is prepared. |

It all depends on how you are going to pay for a room. If you stay in Marriot, it will be enough for a week... if you stay in a pension, for a month. Not for food anyway. For a month here, you need at least US$2,500 for food, room and diversion. |

it depends, where are you gonna stay, what are you gonna do, if you are gonna stay with a friend, you can just buy groceries and be able to make them, but if you are gonna try to find your own place, then, the rent for an apartment without furniture could be around $125 per month if you find a cheap one, it could also depends of where you are gonna be, and YES it's kinda of cheap living here comparing it with living in USA |
