People in El Salvador do what people in the US do for fun. We love going out dancing, to concerts, meeting with friends, eating out. We love seafood, and spend a lot of time at the beach. (click on the first link below for a slide show of some of the things we do for fun!)
We are now in Lent (Semana Santa), and spend a lot of time in church (the country is 90% catholic, and as such, is very church oriented).
Surfing has now come into our culture, and many of us enjoy riding waves. El Salvador has some of the best surfing beaches in the world.
We are avid sports fans, and are open to many sports, including Polo, swimming, boxing, judo, basketball, baseball, etc. As with most of the countries around the world, Soccer is our national sport.
Gardening is very much enjoyed, and you will often see people who live in apartments that will have a few potted plants that they fiercely take care of.
There are also the local fiestas (celebrations), celebrating local saints, cities, holidays. We even have our own Carnival (El Carnaval de San Miguel).
We are a poor but proud people. We share what we have, and embrace those around us. We are hardworking, and dedicated.
I feel a void in my heart when those who visit El Salvador (even if you lived there a WHOLE year, as the poster above stated!!!) can not get past the gangs (as if we were the ones to have invented the concept of gangs) and poverty. They come to El Salvador and see how different from their lives things are but fail to see the beauty of the people. Instead of respecting the differences, they criticize them. It is a great shame.
I hope things change. |

Dance, dance, and dance. We like going to the beach too, you know, la vida es playa. Also, US corporations are taking over Latin American, and you will find McDonalds, Wendy's, Blockbuster, Fridays, Bennihana's, etc., etc., and huge malls with mostly imported products from the US and Europe and China. And like in the U.S., Salvadorian teenagers love to waste their time at malls. |

Go to "metrocentro" which is the big mall in San Salvador. Go dancing, or go to the beach. People like to relax in El Salvador. |

Soccer, go out for pupusas, go shopping, talk with neighbors. Fireworks on holidays.
That's what I picked up from living just outside of San Salvador for a year. The people I lived around didn't have a lot of free time, most of it was spent working.
Also, sadly, there's a lot of bad stuff going on that I suppose could be considered "entertainment". Or, at least what people do when not working. A lot of boys and young men join gangs in the poorer neighborhoods. Also there are a lot of unemployed people who are drunks (bolos). Now, I'm sure you'll get people who will say that's not true, but I lived there, I saw the gang members on the street corners, I saw people get killed. Anyone who denies it either has been very sheltered or lives in some of the rural places that are lucky enough to be untouched by that. |
