What do you think of Guatemala?

I love Guatemala. I spent about 8 months there in 2001. I did have my share of frustrations with the country, but never has a place taken a hold of my heart like Guatemala. It's a great place to study, explore and so on. The winds over lake Panajachel at night are haunting. Coffee plantations, an old pier and train yard in Champerico, sitting on the church steps in Nebaj, bouncing along on a chicken bus while istening to meringue, talking to the locals in Todos Santos, a dip in the hot springs at Fuentes Jorginas (sp) and on and on. Never boring. Read up on your the do's and dont's and then go.. You'll love it!

It depends on the area but overall its has a lot to offer visitors.
Scenic and plenty of places to visit.

I like how the Mayans are retaining their culture and language.
The bus system is dependable and affordable.
The people in general are extremely kind but tend to gossip a bit.
The food is good in the areas that cater tourists but Xela's restaurants are less than desirable and I've eaten at most of them.
With the exception of Antigua...Guatemala is the best place to learn Spanish. Affordable and one on one. The only way to learn spanish is through immersion and you can't do that if the town is filled with students speaking english.

I think many people don't visit Guate because of the reports of violent crime.
Im going back in Feb for a few months.

Personally I think it's the best country in the world! If you are going there to learn spanish the best school in Antigua is Don Pedro de Alvarado.
