You would say no CAFTA (No Central America and Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement), the same way that people were saying no NAFTA when the North American Free Trade Agreement was being addressed. Some people say Si TLC (Yes CAFTA). If you need any more information about Costa Rica, try the TicosLand.com website.

Costa Rica is the last Latin American country to join CAFTA or TLC.
It had passed with a very close margin. It is unfortunate many Costa Ricans dont want free trade, almost all the businesses here are a monopoly and although labor is cheap, electronics, vehicles and materials are can be more than 500% of what it is in the US. Many people against this really dont understand the benefits and are simply voting no out of ignorance.Although it has passed Costa Rica has done nearly nothing to implement the promises they have made and many companies that were planned to do business here, have decided against it due to the lack of cooperation by congress.
Cheaper cars, gas, materials, better internet and cell phones, more customer service and jobs are just the beginning.
I sure hope the government wakes up very soon before they lose any hope of recovering.
Thats TLC or CAFTA explained in a few sentences.
Been here for more than 3 years as a real estate developer.

NO TLC means No al Tratado de Libre Comercio in other words No Free trade agreement.
Which is usually some grafitti done by the unions and some people who are influenced by union leaders and a few neocommunists, hippies and potheads who were against the free trade agreement with the USA because they didn´t want any competition in their line of work.

TLC is the abbreviation for TRATADO DE LIBRE COMERCIO. In english it's called CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement). The CAFTA is a common proyect between the governement of Costa Rica (in this case) with USA to start an agreement where products from both countries are introduced to the other country tax-free.

The problem with this is that many people from Costa Rica are afraid that they won't be able to compete with the prizes and that companies from the US will take costa rican resources without measure. That's why an important group of people manifest their NO so firmly. This has been debated and put in a national referendum, which the YES won.

"NO TLC" means No Free Marketting Trade ( Tratado de Libre Comercio= TLC) I'm Colombian and Pres. Uribe wants to sign it with USA, I think it's not a good idea. Take care. =D

Tratado de Libre Comercio or TLC, means "Free Trade Treaty" in Spanish or in the US it is known as, CAFTA. Central American Free Trade Agreement.

"NO TLC" is a political statement against Free Trade with the US

There is more on this, but I do not think it is wise to get into a political debate/discussion because it is very touchy subject with some political groups like Costa Rica's Trade Unions who are tying to convince the majority of Ticos that the TLC would be bad for them.
