What if the Panama Canal was never built?

A canal would have been built in Nicaragua, through Lago de Nicaragua. It was the next best choice. Actually, they are still thinking about it, since the canal is a lucrative business. It costs an average of 2500 dollars more in fuel and time, per container, to go around the the bottom of the Americas.

Thespiana
Everything would be more expensive, because cost of shipping would be higher.

In this day and age, it would not matter. Everything now days can be shipped by plane, train, or truck. Including people.

We would probably still be walking around in loincloths, better yet, figleaves and string.

urbaba61
Then I would have never sailed through it.

Panama would still be a province of Columbia. To move goods from one Ocean to the other, ships would either sail around the bottom of South America or unload there cargoes on one coast and transport them to the other.

The Panama Railroad would have remained significant and viable.

well if the panama canal had never been built then people would have to sail alllllllll the way around south america to get from the atlntic ocean to the pacific ocean near the point where south america ends (in the south) it is very dangerous. and it also made the trip to the pacific ocean shorter and easier
