What is Costa Rica like?

What is Costa Rica like in late June? When is its rainy season? We're planning to go to Herradura. Will we be rained on the whole time? Any suggestions on what to do there?

The Atlantic seaboard is wet or rainy a lot. The central area and the Pacific are in the first of 2 very different rainy seasons. In June you can expect almost daily short storms in the afternoon, usually cleared up before sunset. Actually it is pretty nice, the rain clears the air and heat. If you are lucky you may hit the veranillo de San Juan, a short dry season in the middle of the rainy season, usually lasts about 2 weeks, sometime in June. The nasty rainy seasons start in late August, runs through November, more or less.
This year tourism is really down, making the trip better for the people who do come. But in June do not expect discounts no matter how empty the places are, Costa Ricans are optimists and will trust that the place will fill up any moment, no matter what all the evidence shows.
Herrdura has good access to north and south and central plateau. The bay itself is too calm for surfing but good surfing beaches are with 15 minutes drive. Crocodile watching is nearby, jungle tours and zip lining, a big animal husbandry park is within 1/2 hour. Bus service is good and cheap- avoid driving if you can, especially rental cars. Jungle tours and sports fishing is close too, but the fishing rates are steep, USA prices.

Not many people will be there, so you will be able to relax. About the rainy season in Cosa Rica it means that we usually have sunny mornings and during the afternoons we have some rain. It might be different every day. It is not a norm.

There is also a break called "Veranillo de San Juan". It is kind of a short summer during that time, then maybe you might catch it!!! :) But rain is also nice in the afternoons. It gives a nice atmosphere and a good chance to read a book and have a siesta. :)

Here there is a short video about that beach you wanna visit so you can have an idea about the place.

Hope you enjoy a lot and have a nice journey here in Costa Rica
