There is not much to see in Guatemala city but the rest of the country has beautiful areas to visit such asa Atitlan and Amatitlan lakes and the ancient city of Tikal.
Guatemala city has warm and cold temperatures, the city is like most big sites, not very clean and a lot of poverty, there is also a large indian population all around the country.

The climate in Guatemala city is perfect Spring all year lone, it does not get to hot or too cold. The city is beautfull since it is blessed with a perfect climate you find a lot of vegetation through out the whole city.
Great places to vist; Antigua Guatemala (the last standing city built by the spanish, a most visit), Tikal (ancient Mayan ruins & city), lakes of Atitlan and Amatitlan, Biotopo del Quetzal (a natural reserce where the Quetzal lives and other exotical creatures), there's a couple of volcanoes where youcan hike and camp out, XETULUL (a award winning theme park), XELA, Semuc Champey (waterfalls & rivers), |

Guatemala City is about 5000 feet above sea level, and is set in a valley surrounded by mountains.
The climate in all of the highlands of Guatemala is very spring like. Temp from 50 to 80 year round.
The city is very crowded and the smell of diesel dominates the air.
There are several museums, a central market, several very modern malls for shopping.
Is it a great place... it has its good points, but it is not for everyone. I would say the same about many other cities in the world as well.
If you are a world traveler and can look past the American perspective on what things should be like, you will enjoy it. If not, I would stick to Antigua and the other touristy areas. |

I agree with the other posters. Guate (what the locals call it) is just like nay other big city you'd find in the States but I think it is more unsafe. I stayed at a bed and breakfast about 10 min from the airport (just as modern as any other) and we were not allowed to go out after dark and there was either razor wire or broken glass in cement on top of the courtyard walls of pretty much every home.
Out of our 11 day vacation we spent only 1 night in Guate and we are glad we got to see the rest of the countryside......Antigua, Monterrico, Panajachel, San Pedro, and Chichicastanengo. |
