Soccer, beaches, drinking and dancing are the main recreation activities however there are many many things to do for recreation, horse back riding, swimming, sirfing, hot water springs, visit the volcanoes, snorkeling, parasailing, gambling, singing karaoke, canopy tours, fishing, boating, kicking back, hiking, camping, partying, canals, sightseeing, art shows, music, concerts, bull fights, carnivals, bird watching, motorcycling etc.

The previous answer is REALLY good!! :D I wanted to add that in the San Jose area young people like to go to the mall to watch movies, eat, hang out, etc. Then people also like to go clubbing to drink, dance, smoke hookah (which became really popular), and have a good time. Sometimes there are big parties in towns like in Palmares or Fiesta Espinar in Guanacaste. Concerts like Festival Imperial are also very popular!! And in January there is a tournament called Copa del Cafe which is a place where young people get together and watch tennis matches. It's a tournament for players who are 18 or younger.
But I reiterate, the previous answer is great!!!!!

Good luck!

There are all kinds of recreational activities. Golf, tennis, horseback riding, bicycling, boating, fishing, hiking, surfing, and more. Here is a website that has a great deal of information on just about anything and everything you can do in Costa Rica. There are many pages of information. Good luck on your homework.
