What is going on in Guatemala right now? |
I am 100% Guatemalan and I live in the US but currently my parents live in Guatemala.
They tell me stories about how Guatemala is really dangerous right now.
Like for example people are just killing people like it's nothing;
ie. They told me a story about how when you hear someone tap your car window you are screwed because that's what people do when they steal your car and then they just shoot you.
I've had cousins who got jumped, robbed and almost killed multiple times.
How did this happen? What is the government currently doing about it? How can it be stopped or prevented from being further? I am just really interested because I don't want to worry about the lives of my parents and I am Guatemalan too and I don't want to see Guatemala turned into some hell country.
I know there are the nice parts of Guatemala, but the other parts are turning really chaotic! |

i just went to san jose pinula guatemala to visit family i did not go anywhere but store to buy food and take my kids to doctor i was to be there for 3 weeks after 7 days i was taken to airport by police because some one left a note that said they would kill me and my family if i did not pay $2000 at 5 pm it is very dangerous there you can see crime reports at the web site below it should take you right to 2009 reports if you go there be very carefull i thought i was but it not going any were but they still seen i was american and thought i had money most guatemalans dont have problems i think its more tourist but just be carefull this happened to me march 17 2009 and its worse everyday |

I believe that it runs in cycles. Central American is feeling the present world economy and there are that many more poor people who resort to crime. The same thing happens here in Honduras. Certain areas will get bad and finally the government will send in police and troops to control the crime wave. Both countries are poor and you can't really fault the government for acting after the fact, because there isn't enough money for full time police protection everywhere at once. |

The problem right now is that organized crime is paying gangs to do thier dirty work. So many people are beign deported from the US and coming to join gangs. Gangs are asking business for money in order not to kill them, when this business don't pay they kill them. That is just one of the many activities they are doing for money.

Guatemala is beatifull country, is not dangerous!!!!!! Guatemala is just like US, Canada, Brazil, Spain, Japan, China, Australia, France and alls countrys, we have dangerous areas and non dangerous areas.

Yes, you are right... I am a dutch women and I live in Guatemala City.
T believe that Guatemala needs a presidant who will stay longer than 4 years. In 4 years you can´t chance anything!
An other problem is that there are not enough jobs, and that there are many jong people (needing jobs). They have to survive... Stealing or not.
Policeman don´t get paid enough, so many policemen are corrupt (not al of them).
And there is angre in he country... This is because of the past... All the violence... So the violence continuas. Really difficult.
Many problems together are making 1 big problem. That is how I see it.
I love Guatemala... But I think when I have children it would be better if my husband (Chapin) and I would take them to another place... It makes me sad.
Guatemala is so beautiful... the people are strong... I pray that they are strong enough to overcome all of this.
