well, you have cusco, (i am from there), is beautiful and full of history. Also arequipa, southern to cusco, it is called "the white city" because is made mostly of a white kind of rock. also trujillo and chiclayo in the northern coast and iquitos in the jungle.

If you just want to go to one, I think Cuzco is best. More things to do there than in Lima, beautiful at night, great shopping plus you get some culture and ancient ruins. Cuzco give a nice mix of modern and ancient. If you want to add more culture or adventure, consider the following sites, which are relatively close to Lima and Cuzco:

*Lunahuaná (white water rafting)
*Pachakamak
*Saqsayhuaman (caves and tombs)
*Qenqo
*Qaliy Pujio
*Pisaq (kick-butt mountains, excellent market, great thin pizza in a restaurant the back)
*Puno
*Ollantaytambo (has megaliths)
*Quillabamba (waterfalls and jungle nearby)
*Tinajani (a beautiful canyon and petrified forest)
*Machu Picchu (of course! - one of the ancient wonders of the world, plus plenty of shopping, eating, and hot springs in Auguas Calientes)

If you want to go out a bit farther, you may want to try:

* Lake Titicaca
*Valley of the Volcanoes
*Qollqa Canyon (sometimes called the Condor Lookout point)
*Arequipa
*Nazca (has the famous Nazca lines that you can fly over)
*Paracas and the Ballestas islands (like a mini-Galapagos. They take you on a motor boat. It's unbelievable)

There are also famous places nearby in Bolivia near the border of Peru, including Copacabana, Isla del Sol and Tiahuanaco. More info about all these sites and others places are on the web pages referenced below :

In terms of beautiful Landscapes and tourism Cusco of course where the famous one of the new seven wonders of the world "Machu Picchu" lies.

For centuries looters, adventurers, treasure hunters and explorers were lured by myths of lost and secret cities in remote site of Peru such as El Dorado or Paititi (the golden city of the Incas), Vilcabamba (the last Inca stronghold). In early colonial times the jungle swallowed up hundreds of gold hungry Spanish and thousands of their native porters. All in vain. They found nothing except the Amazon.

But the irony was that there were lost cities buried in the forested eastern mountain range of the Andes, that were discovered in the last centuries even peasant farmers or tribes of these remote regions pretty much already knew these spots, but like Machu Picchu they did not know the historical significance of this amazing attraction. Machu Picchu was discovered on July 24th in 1901 by three memorable personages: Don Enrique Palma, Don Augustin Lizarraga and Don Gabino Sanchez who were committed writing their names, they chalked on one of the walls of the main temple and after 10 years in 1911 on July 24th the American Hiram Bingham found this writing, he had been looking for Vilcabamba the old, “the last remote site of the Inca resistance against the Spanish (located 100 km, or 60 miles westward from Machu Picchu.

Cusco (also spelled Cuzco, and in the local Quechua language as Qusqu IPA: ['qos.qo]) is a city in southeastern Peru, near the Urubamba Valley (Sacred Valley) of the Andes mountain range. It is the capital of the Cusco Region as well as the Cusco Province. The city has a population of 348,935 which is triple the figure of 20 years ago. Located on the eastern end of the Knot of Cusco, its altitude is around 3,300 m (10,800 ft). Cusco is the historic capital of the Inca Empire.

Cuzco is the gateway to Machu Picchu, the famous Incan city in the clouds.

Hi, I think you can also visit another important cities: Arequipa, Trujillo and Cuzco where you can see Macchupicchu; moreover, if you want to visit a city with nice beaches you can go to Mancora-Piura that is in the north coast of Peru, you can relax there. Peru has also an extensive jungle, you can have a trip in the Amazon river and see a lot of animals, if you like this you should go to Iquitos, that is a nice city with a lot of discos.
