I would recommend a place called Samara which is in the southern part of the Guanacaste "peninsula"- I spent a week there and it is a fairly quiet place with a beautiful beach and great places to eat in and around town center. I stayed at a hotel for 40 a night but I also saw plenty of people packing and tenting. As far as safety, I find CR in general very safe, use your head and you should be fine. There is a surf shop there that we loved -Jessie's?? - great people who can set you up to surf and answer some questions as far as camping out.. You can also venture north along the coast and find some great beaches there too.. Playa Langosta is amazing and Tamarindo is pretty cool but also very "busy"... if you want quiet stay in Samara..if you want to stay in a built up area Tamarindo could also be an option- either way you can't go wrong- CR is a beautiful place with great people |

manuel antonio was nice, but the drugs have started to take ahold of the area after dark. Also, an American woman was raped in front of her husband, after they beat him, 2 years ago by a bunch of locals who they never even arrested despite claims by witnesses that the suspects arrived to work with blood on their shirts. Just be careful after dark since you are traveling alone. I liked Playa Hermosa outside of Jaco. Nice little surfer haven. |

i suggest manuel antonio national park..lots of trails for hiking and what not.
montezuma area is very secluded and has beautiful beaches. u could probably camp right next to the ocean on your own private beach there and not see anyone!
depends if you will have a 4x4 or not though. if so you can find endless places to camp pretty much anywhere. |

I've been to Costa Rica twice now. Once to playa Brasilito (Guanacaste in the North), and once at playa Manuel Antonio (in the South). Southern Costa Rica is 10 times more beautiful than the north (at least on the Pacific side). I describe Manuel Antonio as Maui 50 years ago. Largely undeveloped, remote (it's a 5 hour drive from San Jose, over several one lane bridges, and the road ends at Manuel Antonio National Park LITERALLY). Because it's more remote, I found it more safe. Guanacaste is nice, but the terrain is mostly flat ranchland, and not super tropical like Manuel Antonio. |
