Well it depends of what your interests are. For great nightlife and entertainment, the best places are Escazu, the most upscale town in San José, with great bars and restaurants, and San Pedro, near the University, with many places for students to hang out.
If you want to visit the beaches, Jaco Beach is near San José and very popular. Guanacaste has a lot of beautiful beaches, but it's farter from San José.
Costa Rica is a fun country and its friendly people will be glad to guide you! Have fun!

Girls (the instant friendship kind) are in San Jose, at the Blue Marlin Bar in the Hotel Delrey. There are nightclubs in the Pueblito area for real girls (and the others too).

However, in order to truly appreciate Costa Rica, you have to get out of the city and do some rafting, hiking in the jungles, horse back riding, volcano viewing, etc. Don't make the mistake of staying in San Jose. Or you could take classes in San Jose (Costa Rica Language Academy is great) 4 days a week and visit the country on your long weekends. I did exactly that on one of my trips.
