La Fortuna, cause you are next to the volcano and the hotsprings. San Jose is the main city in CR, but only good to stay the night before your departure. Really not much there, just crowded with some casinos. Spend your time up in the mountains instead, so beautiful! |

do NOT goto san jose. it is horrible. i prefered monte verde the best. its up in the cloud forest and the climate is nice and there is alot of activities and such to do. i also went to manuel antonio but the humidity felt like death. that was a cool spot tho. if you dont mind the heat and the look of the natives(all brown and leathery) then that will work. manuel antonio is the top tourist attraction in the country.(monte verde #2) |

Manuel Antonio is beautiful, it is in the pacific. I have also been to the caribbean side, but I can assure you the beaches are not as nice, with the exeption of Punta Uva.. |

I went to the Pacific side of Costa Rica two years ago near Limon and although we had a good time it was not pleasant. Any one that ever said black sand beaches are pretty has never seen a white sand beach. Black sand is volcanic ash mixed with sand and just looks like mud. yes, real mud. If I were you I'd try the Gulf side and think there are many places that are very nice. I did love seeing the howler monkeys and brought back 6 boxes of Cuban cigars that I picked up for only 60 bucks a box. A nice deal unless the customs man takes them away from you. Avoid any where with a black sand beach. |

Generally, San Jose appeals to the most people, but that's only if you like city life. It all depends what you want. There's some places that are mostly for tourists, whereas other places in the country have almost no tourists (and can be trouble if you do not speak Spanish). Additionally, many of the cities are inland, and do not have beaches. |
