Hello! I guess there are different definitions of 'best' as far as travelling goes. I say there are two types of people who leave their country for pleasure....travellers and tourists. If you're a tourist and like the touristy aspects of a vacation I would go up north to the Osa Peninsula. The beaches there are beautiful, there are plenty of other tourists, and it's a fun place. I personally consider myself a traveller and most enjoyed being in a small town called Quepos. It's a port town and is fairly far south, located on the Pacific side (both of the preceding destinations are Pacific). There are still some touristy things but it's much more local. Nearby is the famous (and absolutely beautiful) Manuel Antonio national park. I have seen some things in that park that trump my experiences in other Latin American rain forests. I have heard good things about the Atlantic side as well (I'm a scuba diver and total water baby so I am usually on a coast) but haven't been there so can't speak from experience. When I go back there next year it will be to Quepos again. Happy travels!

Take a tour and see the whole country. There wasn't one place that I didn't like. Was enthralled by the rain forests on the Carribean side when we took small boats through the canals of the national park, loved the tram ride through the canopy near San Jose, am so hooked on Cafe Britt coffee that I order it on-line by the case, the Pacific side with it's black sand beaches were amazing, & the spa at the Arenal volcano was truly a wonderful experience. Listening to the monkey's howling, the eagles screaming & the sounds of the insects at night at Monte Verde was awesome. I would do the entire tour again exactly as it was but with a little more time at each place.

Arenal Volcano, Osa Peninsula.
best beaches on Pacific are Mal Pais, Samara, Ocotal and Montezuma.
best beaches on Caribbean coast are Manzanillo and Punta Uva

There are no "Best" places to visit in Costa Rica!

Each place you visit whether it is one of their beautiful beaches,or a cloud forest, or a rain forest, or visiting one of their several volcano's, or coffee plantations, or one of their parks and nature reserves, or a "Jungle" trip, or an exciting "White Water" trip or a scenic "River trip", or whether you visit a small town or a larger one like San Jose (which is the biggest city in Costa Rica) and hob nob with the Ticos there, or visit the Jade museum which has the biggest collection of Pre-Columbian jade in the world, or their Gold museum with thousands of gold items, etc,, or their many fascinating colorful art galleries, or their Craft booths down town San Jose - it will provide you will a memorable experience that will last you for the rest of your life!

And you will be very glad you visited Costa Rica!

VIVA LA PURA VIDA!

I Went to Costa Rica in Feb. of this year. I spent three days in Rincon de la Vieja which was nice if you wanted to sit back and relax. Not much to do there. Then we went to La Fortuna, we stayed at Arenal lodge. I really LOVED the hotel, nice beautiful view. We had a busy 4 days there, theres lots to do plus it cool how you can see the Volcano errupt. Plus there alot of places where you can drive off to that are not that far.
Last place we went to was Playa Samara, that was nice but not very much to do other than kick back at the beach. We did trive north to Playa Tamarindo, that was alot more busy. There was a little beach called Playa Carillo, now that was beautiful, It was quiet and peaceful. It all depends on what you are looking to do. All Costa Rica seem to be a good place to visit.
