San Jose. I've tried driving there from liberia. . . terrible idea. Horrible roads from that direction. I've tried it and ended up with flat tires stranded on a little traveled path.

Definitely San Jose. If you are driving, I would rent an SUV or Jeep, or anything other than an ordinary car! Costa Rica is absolutely our favorite place to travel, but the roads can be treacherous.

the san jose airport is the one you need to arrive. it takes 3 hrs to the arenal by car and the view is amazing when you go by zarcero or san ramon towns

I have made it from SJO (San Jose) to Arenal via shuttle in about 2 1/2 hours before.
From LIR (liberia) I think it is a bit longer and worse roads, I'm not sure exactly how much, probably at least 1 hour more.
