What is the free zone, or la zona libre?

I read an answer about shopping in the free zone. I am doing a project on Panama in my Spanish class and I want to put this in my report.

La Zona Libre is in Spanish meaning the Free Zone.

conde_c_b
Either way it is fine because it means the means the same. For a typical Panamaian Citizen you will hear him/her mention " La Zona Libre" but if you go to any hotel and ask for the " Free Zone" then they will understand what you are tell them.

It's a tax free area near Colon

yare
The Free Zone or Zona Libre is located in Colon City on the Altlanic side of the country. And as the name says, its a place for companies to put their offices, showrooms and storage rooms for products in transit, meaning that for example this products will be made in China and then distributed to America, meanwhile they stay in Panamanian territory without paying any taxes. It´s a tax free zone. Tourists can shop there and the goods will be sent to the airport for pick up. This goods can´t enter panamanian territory or you will have to pay the correspondant taxes.
