What is the official language of south america?

South American is composed of many countries.

Spanish and Portuguese are the two most commonly-spoken languages.

However, there are many language groups there, including Andean (Arawakan, Quechumaran, and Tupian) and the Ge-Pano-Carib family, which includes over 200 languages.

Lisa
I don't believe that there is an "official" language of South America. Spanish is predominantly spoken in all South American countries except for Brazil, where Portuguese is its dominant language.

The official language of Brazil is Portuguese, and for all other South American countries, the official language is Spanish.

First of all, south america is not one country, you dexter...brazil speaks portuguese, in the guyanas they speak french and i think some dutch, in the rest of the countries spanish.....

With the exception of Brazil who has Portuguese as the national language, it is easy to get around with Spanish. Be careful if you are outside the major cities however, local indigenous languages abound and some have no relation at all to Spanish so communication could be a challenge.

Good luck!

There is no official language of south america, it's not a single country. For the most part the countries in South America would be spanish speaking.
