What is the perfect souvenir to take home from Callao, Peru? |
We're going to South America. I would like to buy something from Callao, Peru that is exclusively (or at least popularly) available in Callao, Peru? We're not going to Machu-Pichu, etc. Just want to know what to buy? It can be anything (food included) but it must be small enough to fit in my handcarry.
If you live there, what item would you like to have from the Philippines? (Nothing ilegal or big, okay)
Thanks! |

Ok, I can see that you are travelling by boat (Callao, Coquimbo and Valparaiso). On every case the ship docks at 6am and all passengers are free to visit the city, in the case of Callao you are next to Peru's capital, Lima.
First you take a tour to Downtown Lima (Colonial Lima) in the morning and then at lunch time, head for the Miraflores district and enjoy our great cuisine, maybe to a place were they serve Buffet (like Mango's at Larco Mar Mall) you'll also have a great view of the beach from 200 yards above. You have to try our Pisco Sour, an unique peruvian cocktail. In Miraflores there are several Gift and Souvenier Markets on Petit Thouars street. They got tons of handycrafts and I would also suggest a Pan Pipe (like the other answerer), they are called ANTARA and maybe a typical Inka wool hat that covers your ears called CHULLO. You can also find necklaces, silver, Huge Amazon Jungle Taxidermi insects and even fosil rocks. Those markets are not expensive and they fill 2 blocks of the street near Saga Fallabela store (can't miss it).
When in Coquimbo, you'll find also the city of La Serena. They are small and easy to visit, there you will find a lot of handcraft made of Copper Foil. Copper is so abundant in Chile that is the only place you are going to find those souverniers.
Then in Valparaiso you have to visit Viña del Mar wich is right next to it. There is the place where they have an international music festival like San remo in Italy, many famous groups have played there.
Inside the Cruise you will find working , people from around the world, each with a name tag and country of origin. try to locate the Chilean and Pruvian for they will want their day off when they dock in their home country and maybe help you a lot finding places to go.
Enjoy a great trip! |

I grew up in Lima and I've been to El Callao a few times. This area is well known for its port, fishing, and Peruvian navy bases. I am pretty sure that more than likely you will find small souvenirs made from sea shells, or sea glass, key chains, bottle openers, or better yet get a tour to one of the Peruvian Navy vessels, they will have a gift shop in the end of the tour. |

Offhand I don't know anything specific from Callao, but some of the common gifts from Peru are Wool or Alpaca Blankets or sweaters, brass Llama carvings, clay plates from Cusco and perhaps thos wood flutes or windpipes (sorry don't know the real names.)
Make sure you take home a few bottles of Inca Kola for your friends! You won't find this soda in the Phillipines as you won't find Jollybee in Peru! |
