I went to Manuel Antonio area on the pacific side and loved it.
Manuel Antonio park was great, there was this butterfly garden near there too that was very cool. The beach in the park is the BEST.

I have been all over the country adn really like several places but if I had to choose I would say Avellanas beach, Manuel Antonio Beach, Arenal Volcano Tortuga island and Tortuguero canals.

The Alrano Volcano ( pardon my spelling). There is a hot springs and garden there which is really beautiful. There was a minor eruption the first time I was there. It was quite an experience. It was very loud, like a jet engine. It is a great place for couples. I had my girlfriend with me the second time I was there. It is often foggy so you can not really see the volcano.
If you go I would suggest the Pacific coast rather than the Caribbean. There is more to see and more to do.

If you want a nice beach town, go to montezuma. It's amazing.

San Carlos de la Fortuna is amazing for the volcano arenal.

Monteverde/santa elena is awesome. its a bit cold. but you can go in the cloud forest and its super nice with all the animals.

san jose kinda sucks, don't waste too much time there. plus its not super safe.

I have been to many places in the country, and one of my favorite places was La Fortuna, because of the many options of things to do, the stunning scenery, and the active nightlife. Also I would have to say that Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean side is quite relaxing and absolutely beautiful as well. It offers calm waters and less tourists than the Pacific side. I went Manuel Antonio and found it to full of tourists, and expensive, but fun night life. Also my friend almost died in a rip current there. Jaco on the Pacific is just a dirty party town on the beach, but can still be a lot of fun. I have not been to Hermosa, but I heard it was great.
