What kind of backpack should I buy? I'll be in South America for 3 months.? |
I'll be going through Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile. Mostly I'll be staying in Hostels, but I do intend to take 2-4 hikes of 3-6 days each. I'm sure I'll be buying trinkets and gifts for folks back home, but I'm not sure how many and, depending on cost, I'll probably end up shipping a lot of things home rather than carry them. What backpack should I buy for this trip? I've considered several, but there are so many choices! I've considered the Kelty 3100, but it may be too small. Also, the Osprey Aether 45, but again, maybe too small, but then the Kelty Redwing 5000 or 5600 might be way too big and heavy. I want something light that I can take up Macchu Picchu, but also something that will hold all the stuff I accumulate over 3 months in South America, but I have no idea how much or little that may be. Hydration pack is no concern at all. I wouldn't use one. Thanks Additional Details Just to respond to Marina Rat (although I'm not sure why I'm giving you the time of day). I DO NOT claim to know more than you or anyone else about this subject. THAT'S WHY I ASKED THE QUESTION. I actually realize that I know VERY LITTLE about the subject, which is why I asked the question. Also, I HAVE been outside my country several times, just not in this fashion. YOU seem to be the one who thinks he knows everything. I mean, you did SEEK OUT my question to answer, right? Then why be a jerk? Just answer the question and keep the insults to yourself. But thanks for the 40 lb limit idea. I WILL keep that in mind, as that could be valuable advice. If only it had been presented in a manner that didn't portray you as a jerk.......... |

i'd say that the kelty 3100 is way too small, maybe it would be ok if you werent going to accumulate things, but im liking the osprey one. it looks to be about the right size, just limit your clothing, and possibly just leave a whole section empty for gifts and stuff... and if you need to, go ahead and ship things back home near the end of your trip, but whatever you ship, make sure that it isn't of much value to you, because shipping things either to south america or from south america hardly ever works out for me and my family... we've had countless packages that either got stolen or never made it to the united states. so, you might want to ship a lot of your clothing back and then have gifts and such in your actual backpack. so id say get the osprey 45 (look up the reviews on that backpack to make sure that it can handle your travels) and when you go to bolivia make sure you go on the death road!! :) |

I don't know a thing about backpacks, but you may consider visiting Uruguay from Buenos Aires. Colonia is 45 min by ferry from BAires, and then Montevideo -Uruguay's capital city- is some 2 hours from Conolia. It is worth it. |

Dude, back packing is cool, but you may need to bring 2 as one is not going to be enough for all the stuff you will accumulate, each country has something very special about it, and in each country you will want to pick up so much interesting, stuff. As for the back pack itself, I know nothing about them, but I think you would be alright with 50 lbs if you are relatively athletic or if you need to take a little extra.
Anyway have a good time!! |

A world traveler like you should know that the best backpack for YOU is the one that FITS YOU RIGHT... and you NEVER and I do mean... NEVER put MORE THAN 40 POUNDS IN IT.. but you probably won't listen.. you people who have big wet ideas about what you want to do and have never been outside your own country.. always think you know everthing... but I am still staying.. GET THE ONE YOU LIKE TO WEAR and NEVER put over 40 pounds in it.. (I have been to Macchu Picchu and you will BLESS ME if you listen to my 40 pound limit)
I agree with the person that mentioned the Coleman... I have one that I have carried in over 100 countries and they are perfect in size and weight as far as I'm concerned.. and I have backpacked all over the world.. so I'm sure you know more than I do. |
