What kind of fun things are there to do in Guatemala?

Especially in Antigua and Guatemala City, like great restaurants, site-seeing and nightlife. How much do these things cost?

Hey curly, u seem very interested in Guate, and I'm glad to help! First of all let me just say that the city is often skipped by the average tourist because of rumors (some well founded) of crime and not many things to offer. I live in the city and frankly I love it. But I guess you have to live here to know where to go and what to do. Here's my first recommendation: Rattle and Hum bar in Zona Viva (Zone 10) an australian mate runs it and it's a good place to meet people from all over.
Restaurants: Tre Fratelli also in Zona Viva italian and delicious. A bit farther away El Portal del Angel gives u an amazing view of the city and a good piece of meat.
Nightlife go to a club called Alfred in Zona Viva as well, it's the hottest thing now i think.

Antigua is a whole other world. Backpacker central and hombase for most tourist travelling around the country. Many people come here for the spanish schools, yet very few learn any spanish at all cause they make friends with english speaking tourists :) which is funny but great cause u find travel partners, meet other travellers and feel safer in numbers. Mono Loco is a Must on Ladies Night Tuesday. Kashba on Saturday. I don't wanna make this too long if u need anything send me a mail jmlakes@gmx.net and see u in Antigua!

About 8 times cheaper than N.Y.C

you can get a day trip to Pacaya Volcano, it is pretty cheap and amazing. I recommend you go to Cecilia of National Travel on 6th avenida, between 5th and 6th Calle. Their number is 7832-8383 and they have all sorts of short and unexpensive trips you can take advantage of while in antigua

Hi Curly, depending on the amount of time you have, the following places are great places to hang out. Panajachal for a few days, nice views of the volcanos, sit in really cool bars, cafes. shop around for traditional goods.San Pedro across the lake has some nice thermal springs, and is a nice place to hang and read, write etc for a few days. Antigua has winding cobble steets, nice restaurants, movie cafes, where you can get lunch, dinner and watch a flick or 2, and as the other emails said, learn some spanish at one of the schools if you got time. Tikal is nice to visit and great photo opportunities, i got loads. Rio dulce for a few days has some nice accomodations, with walkways to cabins throughout the forest and an ambient feel to it in the evenings. Have a fun trip.

If you are a woman I suggest you travel in packs with men and don't go out in the night. Truth is that in Guatemal thare has been an incredibly amount of hate crimes against women in the last few months. And it is not the safest city in the world, specially for foreigners because it is very well known that the thieves spot americans miles away and are really good at what they do. It's a nice city, and the cost it's really cheap, everything, just make sure to haggle at local markets.

OK, being that i live in guatemala, i can give you some tips:

Restaurants:

Tre Fratelli
Mexico Lindo
Portal del Angel
Hacienda Real
Cebollines
Klosters
Tapas y Canas

Clubs:

Khalua . In Zona Viva, zone 10, right next to Camino Real
Rattle and Hum . In Zona Viva, zone 10
Cuatro Grados Norte . quite a lot of bars and pubs in zone 4 in guatemala.
Alfred Hitchcock . Another nice bar in zona viva zone 10

Almost every thursday me and my friends go to Rattle and Hum so maybe i will see you there.

Antigua, have not gone in such a long time so i will reserve the comments.
