What paper work is needed for marriage?
i am a USA citizen marrying a Tica...what is the cost for the paperwork help? Additional Details is there common law marriage?
The cost is variable, but it is not much. The required paper work is not much and you can do most of it yourself. The lawyers guild (colegio profesional) publishes the minimum fees they are supposed to charge for specific services.
Common law marriage is a real option but can provoke problems later. It will not help you get residency until it is established by years of accumulated proof that you have been living as a married couple. Being on a tourist visa makes that accumulation harder. Long before you can get the legal benefits of marriage (in your case full residency status) your spouse can get the legal benefits of a divorce (in your case every thing you own).
You need to prove you are single; unmarried, divorced or widowed as many times as married. A full ID is necessary (passport or residency card is enough usually). There may be a few other things, the rules are always changing and how to comply with the rules is, at best, capricious. But the legal minimum marriage is relatively easy and cheap. The real costs come later.
You should read the Garland Baker stories in amcostarica.com. You can pull his stories by simple search on the site by using his name and select which stories to read by title.

Check with the US embassy, and see what do you need. We do all the stuff the ask for, we got married in Costa Rica, and I move to US I got all the paperwork for my green card, I did all this in Costa Rica, in the US embassy.
We never pay to a lawyer, we just did ourselves, 7 1/2 years later Im here with my lovely husband and 2 beautiful princess!.

Both of your questions are probably best answered by a qualified attorney. To start finding the information you want, try looking at the Costa Rica Embassy website. You will find some of the information there.
