What percentage of Costa Ricans understand English? (estimation)?

Not exactly fluent English but just enough to get by and help you out. Oh, and I will be visiting Santa Teresa so, just throwing that out there too. :)

Once you get outside of the big tourist hotels, don't expect to find much help if you don't know any Spanish. So in Santa Teresa you probably will want to cram as much Spanish in as possible. But never the less, you are going to love Costa Rica!

Pretty much anyone in the tourist industry will understand English. Outside the tourist industry, not so many. But people are really nice, and I've found that there are always ways to communicate. I haven't been to Santa Teresa, so I have no information for you there.

I find that you can get around pretty well without much Spanish. I am pretty limited and have managed fairly well- with a couple of humorous incidents like the day I wanted to buy 1 tomato and came home with 1 case of tomatoes- but everyone is really helpful and a little Spanish can go a long way. I am so grateful that the folks at mycostaricalink.com helped me plan my trip or I would have been totally lost. They had every detail and contingency planned for - even the MalPais/Santa Theresa leg- excellent people to work with. Good luck on your trip!

You will find plenty of people in and around tourist areas speak English. But once you get outside of the tourist areas it can be quite difficult to find people who speak English. I experienced it because my spanish is limited. So if you don't speak Spanish stick to the tourist areas.

More than half the population speaks some english and all of the people in the tourism induistry or near the tourist places and beaches.
But don´t worry too much about the language barrier most costarricans are very helpful and patient when dealing with tourists.
