What should I get my girlfriend for her Costa Rica trip this summer? |
My girlfriend is going on a school trip to Costa Rica for two weeks this summer. She is a French Minor but doesn't really know Spanish at all, just a little I taught her that I remembered from high school. I want to get her something for this trip like Rosetta Stone software so she can learn to talk to her host family when she gets there but I never imagined it was $300!
I was hoping you all would help and give me some ideas that would make her stay there easier.
Thanks for your help!

ALl the digital translators I have seen / used are really not worth the effort to use, so people do not use them.
Give her a copy of the University of Chicago Spanish English, English SPanish dictionary and give it to her as soon as possible. Have her read the material before the word lists start (ENglish to Spanish of course but have her try the Spanish to ENglish material as well.)
If you can get a local SPanish newspaper, daily or weekly and translate some articles word by word (not always possible) as well as read for general understanding.
And a bottle of sun block. |

Get her an english-spanish translator which she can download on to her ipod (if she owns one) and use it whenever she needs to.. If she doesn't own an ipod buy her one of those digital translators she can carry around or even cheaper a book :) I would pick the last option as it is less expensive, and you can probably end up buying her something to go with it.. like a little bag or something.. |

Get her a spanish-english digital translator.
Or take your chances with a bittorrent download of RS. |

Hi Nick,
I too had used the digital translator and they are great on paper or when you're buying them. But they are a bit inconvenient when talking. I think the same would go with the ipod. My recommendation, go the old fashioned route, get a small, practical English/Spanish dictionary. This way she can skim through it really fast!
Good luck!
PS, Ticos are extremely patient and will help her with her Spanish:) |

Avon Skin-So-Soft Insect Repellent with sunscreen
I buy a bottle of this everytime I go to CR. You get the bug spray & sun screen all in one shot and it works better for me than anything else I've tried. |
