You can find a lot of relevant information about Costa Rica in Wikipedia, in the national tourism institute website, and in the TicosLand.com website. The links have been provided. I hope they help.

I lived in Costa Rica for 2 months while studying abroad, and I promise you will love it!
Some things you HAVE to do:
- Zip line in Monteverde "SkyTrek"- best thing I've ever done in my life!
- Climb the waterfalls in Montezuma- pretty tough hike, but absolutely gorgeous
- Raft on the Pacuare river
- Visit a national park. There are quite a few, depending on where you are. Some really good ones are Corcovado to the south (best) and Carerra. Tons of wildlife and monkeys!!

As for the culture, the Ticos are really fascinating people. They are very respectful, but at the same time very laid back. I don't know if you speak spanish, but the only way to really describe life down there is tranquilo. The traditional food is gallo pinto (rice and beans). There will usually be something added to it, but for the most part rice and beans are definitely a staple. The food differs by the province you're in.
Music is really anything you can dance to! Salsa, meringue, reggeaton, very very fun!

Have a great time!

When I went to Costa Rica, I helped build a bridge in the mountains above Santa Elena. Lost my heart to the Costa Ricans. Our group also helped build trails in the mountain jungle adjacent to Monteverde.

the first place you should visit is guanacaste, there you can visit some really Beautiful beaches like playa del coco and playa hermosa, some other nice places are monte verde and tortuguero, which are both rainforest. if you go to san jose you should visit the history museum or the gold museum. and if you still have time you can go to cartago which is about 30 min from san jose and see some colonial style churches and buildings.
if you have any more questions about costa rica send me a message) =)

Have you thought about volunteering? It's a great way of really getting a feel for Costa Rica and doing something to help under-resourced communities. Tropical Adventures arrange volunteer projects for volunteers in indigenous reserves, community project, teaching, national parks and animal sanctuaries.

They also arrange tours like conyoneering, rainforest and volcano treks and surfing lessons and it's all non-profit.

Check out their website at www.TropicalAdventures.com if you're interested!

Activities that are available:
swimming, sunbathing, surfing, scuba, snorkeling, kayaking, canoeing, deep sea fishing, hiking, canyoning, horseback riding, ATVs, white water rafting, zip lining, rapelling, waterfalls, volcanoes, touring spice/coffee/banana plantations, spa treatments, museums, shopping, hot springs and I'm sure I missed a bunch more. Sooo many thing to do.

Enjoy

You can go whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River or the Reventazon River.

You can swim, snorkle or scuba dive at the beaches in Guanacaste.

You can take your life in your hands by renting a car and driving around the countryside.

A hotel just outside San Jose that I highly recommend is the Hotel Bougainvillea.
