South America is mostly civilized, so about anything you need you can get there. Depends if you're going to the countryside or not. I lived in Chile for 5 years, brought a ton of contact lens stuff - but in the end I could buy some cheap in Santiago. If you need quality shoe wear, bring some from the US. Tons of shoes in S.A., but low quality/cheap, since most people are poor. Credit cards only in the big cities; dollars are xchanged easily.
Get immunized against Hepatitis A, and a cholera vaccine. Bring your medications if needed, if you're going to the jungle bring the usual, emergency kit, water purifiers.
Other than that, you'll enjoy using local stuff!
In some areas, esp Peru/Lima, DON'T carry cash/passports etc. Try to store them with someone you know there. It's a dangerous place, and I've seen people stripped of everything they own. Chile is mostly petty theft.
Hope this helps! Enjoy yourself and understand the culture. I don't look hispanic and got a load of hatred against 'gringoes', mostly from the working class. If you have brown hair/brown eyes you'll have it easy. |
