Be prepared for cold weather. Ecuador has a variety of climates, and in the middle third of the country, where Quito and Cuenca (the 3rd largest city) are located, it can get very cold at night. If you are planning on hiking and camping near the coast, then it will be warm, but anywhere in the Andes it gets down to 35 or 40 during the night. (The temperature will also depend on your altitude.) Ecuadorians make great wool sweaters, so if you don't want to bring your bulky sweaters with you, you can always buy one in Quito before you head out. Also bring a rain jacket because although it doesn't rain all that much, it rains just about every day in Quito between 2 and 4pm, for about an hour. Along with sweaters, Ecuadorians also make mittens, hats, and other warm gear, so you could plan on buying those things when you get there.
Bring a good water filtration system as it's not safe to drink stream or lake water. If your feet are bigger than about an 8 in women's you will have a tough time finding shoes that fit you, so bring good hiking boots. Don't underestimate the sun in the mountains, and bring lots of good sunblock. The sun is much stronger because you're on the equator, so even if the temperature is cold, you can still get a nasty sunburn.
Have fun! Ecuador is great! |

Okay I am from Ecuador so I think I can help you alot.
First of you go to Ecuador to hike and things like that if youa re going to be in the outdoors I am sure that for the fact that youa re American you would have alot of mosquito bites, and well it's normal cause youa re not used to it, so take a few mosquito repelent and if you can buy one when you are in Ecuador already because I am sure the ones in here wont keep them away for long.
Second, take money but not too much money ,as you must know Ecuador is not such a expensive place to live and eather to go for Vcation so you dont need that much money just take the necessary.
And as what more you should bring you camping stuff what you normally bring whrn you go camping in the US.
Ecuador is a magnificent place to go and I ma really glad you chose to go there I promess you wont be dissapointed. |

If you are going to be in the rainforest, bring clothing that is nylon, fast drying. I wear long-sleeves and long pants, just light weight because I don't like bug bites! Bring a hammock and a mosquito net if you will be camping. Bring a head lamp or flashlight for night hikes if you want to see frogs. Bring the best binoculars you can buy or borrow--you won't regret it. |
